Homes

graphic series

Year:

2022

These graphic series emerged from the stories of Ukrainian refugees I encountered during my volunteer shifts at Amsterdam Central Station. While I was assisting refugees on the platforms, they often shared with me how their homes were destroyed. I vividly remember two Ukrainian women who showed me a photograph of their burnt-out, five-floor ”chruschevka" building in Mariupol. It was exactly the same type of soviet housing I had lived in Moscow.

The loss of one's home, whether due to forced immigration or the ravages of war, strikes a deeply personal chord. Through these series I wished to reflect on the profound pain endured by those displaced from their cherished homes, hoping to serve as a testament to the collective yearning for peace and a future where no one is uprooted from the sanctuary they once called home.
